SMITH VOLUNTEERS TIME AND TALENTS AT EXPO FOR SPECIAL PERSONS
(DALLAS, TEXAS – AUGUST 31, 2015) Like every year on the third weekend of August, Daryl Flood Van Foreman, Mark Smith traveled to the White County Fairgrounds in Reynolds, Indiana. Smith volunteers his time and talents at the Expo for Special Persons (Expo), a free one day event focused on celebrating physically and mentally handicapped persons.
Roughly 450 kids and young adults attended this year’s event. One of the most popular events of the day is the caravan of semi-trucks, race cars, motorcycles, fire engines and police cars, in which special persons are encouraged to take a ride. Those in attendance are given the opportunity to sit behind the wheel of the trucks and talk on the CB radios or just blast the horn. The day’s activities also include airbrush shirt painting, face painting, clowns, sand art, wrestlers, live music, games and food.
“I really enjoy seeing the kids’ smiles as they come by our table,” said Smith. “They usually run straight to the trucks after registration. It gets really noisy between the air horns and the sirens, but the kids love it. They have to deal with a lot of challenges in their lives and we just try to give them a day that is all about them.”
Smith has been volunteering at the Expo for Special Persons for 21 years, along with truck driver friends, Ron Rossi from VIP Transport, 24 years; and Dave and Brenda Stewart, from Chipman Relocation in Seattle, Washington, 18 years. Together, these drivers arrive the day before the event to help Expo organizers in whatever way possible, including event set up, monetary donations, serving lunch, handing out donated items and giving rides in their trucks. Expo for Special Persons operates as a nonprofit organization, func tioning solely on donations.
